Highlights of MICCAI 2023
By General Co-Chairs – Tanveer Syeda-Mahmood, Jim Duncan, Russ Taylor
With the days of the COVID-19 pandemic behind us, it was great to welcome everyone to the 26th International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer-Assisted Intervention (MICCAI) in the beautiful city of Vancouver, Canada. Despite the visa issues that some out-of-country participants faced, we had a large in-person attendance of over 2100 registrants (plus over 400 virtual) from 58 countries. It was great to see our community come back together. The energy was palpable in the general sessions and in the satellite workshop days as well.
The theme of this year’s conference was to bring clinicians and engineers together more closely. We succeeded in this goal in several ways including the appointment of Clinical Chairs, creating clinical sessions in the main conference program, and through increased focus on CLINICCAI 2023, a co-located event with an excellent keynote speaker, Gretchen Purcell Jackson.
Among the highlights of the new features this year were dual-track formats to accommodate the increased attendance, Fireside Chat sessions with experts, Poster Highlights by Program Chairs, Ph.D Thesis Madness by the MICCAI Student Board in addition to the large number of satellite programs of Tutorials, Workshops, and Challenges.
The scientific content, as seen through the presentations and the discussions, was quite high and we came away with a number of new ideas and work to follow up on. The quality of the orals and posters were also high with the selective and rigorous reviewing process employed and funneled by over 1600 reviewers and 130 Area Chairs.
The quality of the keynote presentations in both the main MICCAI conference and CLINICCAI was excellent. It was a pleasure to have Turing Award winner Yann LeCun present and connect with the MICCAI community. We were delighted to hear leading experts Jocelyne Troccaz and Mihaela van der Schaar share their field experiences with attendees.
Conference attendees can also watch recordings of the conference sessions on the CONFlux virtual platform. The recordings will be available to explore until January 5, 2024. Check your inbox for login instructions about how to access the on-demand content.
Lastly, Vancouver was a wonderful host city and the venue was high quality. We are looking forward to seeing you again at MICCAI 2024 in Marrakesh, Morocco next year!
